wiring Home theater can be one of the hardest things about putting together a home theater system. You're all that time spent researching HDTV, amplifier and speakers - and then even more time finding the best place to buy everything from. However, their problems can really begin when all the home and unpack all the boxes ..... now what? Unless you are very experienced with all connectors and cables that come with your equipment it can be quite a difficult task to put it all together.

Let us look at the main connections and cable types you will encounter and describe what they are.

1 HDMI
The standard method for linking the new audio-visual devices. It can send audio and video signals between your equipment.

2 DVI
digital connection for sending video signals. Less common on HDTV, but very common on projectors and computers.

3 Component
This type of connection is sending an analog video signal between devices. You will recognize the red, green and blue RCA connectors on the rear panel.

4 S-Video
connector to send analog video signals - but there is no quality component connection

5 Composite
Another analog connection for video signals. Compared with others provides basic video quality, but it is still widely used as it is easy to setup.

6 VGA
You May find this entry at the back for connecting a PC or laptop. Many computers have this type of connection and so it can be a useful addition to the types of connections the TV has.

7 Optical audio
way of sending digital audio signals between devices. You can use this to send 5.1-channel surround sound and stereo audio.

8 Coaxial audio
Similar to the optical version of the above. This is another way to send both stereo and surround sound digital audio signals.

9 Stereo audio
red and white RCA jacks that give you a basic way of connecting audio from your device.

10 Speaker Cable / Speaker Wire
Different kinds of connections to the already mentioned, but an important part of your wiring for home theater. This link sends audio from the amplifier to the speakers. This type of cable usually consists of two separate wires to carry the audio signal to each speaker.

So it's a pretty long list. No wonder it can get confusing when it comes to wiring together our home theater system.

The main thing to remember is that, although there are many types of connections that are available to you - you do not expect to use them all at the same time
